Where is the Vallée des Merveilles and how do you get there from Monaco?
The Vallée des Merveilles lies in the upper Roya valley, around 70 kilometres from Monaco. You have two ways in: by road or by rail.
By car from Monaco
Allow around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours of driving. The most direct route goes through Ventimiglia before climbing the Roya valley via Breil-sur-Roya and Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende. A windier but spectacular alternative crosses Sospel via the Col de Castillon from Menton.
From Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende, the D91 mountain road climbs towards Lac des Mesches and the hamlet of Castérino, the traditional trailheads. This road has seen closures for works in recent years: check its status with the Tende Tourist Office (+33 4 83 93 98 82) before setting off.
Aboard the Train des Merveilles from Nice
The Train des Merveilles is one of the most beautiful railway lines in France. Departing from Nice-Ville, it reaches Tende in around 2 hours 15 minutes through a dizzying landscape of gorges, viaducts and spiral tunnels, calling at Peille, Sospel, Breil-sur-Roya and Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende.

What is there to see in the Vallée des Merveilles?
The rock engravings of Mont Bégo
The heart of the site centres on slabs polished by ancient glaciers, where Bronze Age people carved their symbols. Some figures have become iconic, such as the "Sorcerer" and the "Tribal Chief". The richest areas are regulated: you may only move along waymarked trails or in the company of a guide licensed by the National Park.
The lakes and glacial landscapes
The valley strings together a succession of mountain lakes: Lac Long Supérieur, Lac des Conques and the twin Valmasque lakes on the Fontanalba side. Which hikes should you do in the Vallée des Merveilles?
The Vallée des Merveilles must be earned: no public motorised access reaches the engravings. Here are the classic routes, to be adapted to your fitness level and the state of the access roads.
The classic ascent from Lac des Mesches
This is the busiest route: around 3 hours 15 minutes of climbing and 900 metres of elevation gain up to the Refuge des Merveilles, perched on the shore of Lac Long Supérieur. From there, the first engravings are a further thirty-minute walk away. Strong hikers can do the round trip in a day, but a night in the refuge turns the excursion into a true immersion.
Fontanalba from Castérino
On the north-eastern flank of Mont Bégo, the Fontanalba valley offers a gentler, family-friendly approach, with its own engravings and the famous "Sacred Way". The walk starts from the hamlet of Castérino, subject to road access.
The GR52 for seasoned hikers
The legendary GR52, linking Saint-Dalmas-Valdeblore to Menton, crosses the Vallée des Merveilles via the Baisse de Valmasque. A multi-day trekking option with nights in mountain refuges, reserved for experienced mountain walkers. The Gordolasque valley to the west makes a beautiful alternative gateway.

Do you need a guide to visit the Vallée des Merveilles?
On waymarked trails, hiking is free and unrestricted. However, the regulated zones containing the finest engravings can only be visited with a mountain guide holding the "Merveilles" licence issued by the Mercantour National Park. These guided tours, offered in summer from the Refuge des Merveilles or Castérino, last around 3 hours and give access to slabs that are otherwise off-limits.
The rules protect an irreplaceable heritage: it is forbidden to touch the engravings, walk off the authorised routes, use metal-tipped hiking poles or camp in the engraving zone. In season, 4x4 excursions with a driver-guide are also available from the valley, a comfortable option to approach the site without a long walk, subject to that year's access conditions.
When should you visit the Vallée des Merveilles?
The ideal window runs from mid-June to mid-October. Earlier, snow still covers the high trails; later, the refuges close and conditions turn wintry. July and August bring the longest days and every facility open, along with more visitors. September is the connoisseur's secret: golden light, peaceful trails and still-mild temperatures.
In the mountains, start early: afternoon storms are frequent in summer, and the low morning light reveals the engravings at their best. Pack warm layers even at the height of summer, as the altitude exceeds 2,000 metres.
