Cheap Hotel in Monaco: How to Stay in the Principality Without Blowing Your Budget

Dates, room categories, nearby towns, extra costs and offers: an honest guide to keeping the cost of a night in Monaco down, from a 4-star hotel on Port Hercule.

Finding a cheap hotel in Monaco is a challenge: the Principality is one of the most expensive destinations in Europe and budget properties are almost non-existent. Yet between the dates of your stay, the room category, the location and a few booking habits, the price gap can be significant. This guide, written by a 4-star hotel on Port Hercule, is deliberately honest: it explains how to lighten the bill without promising the impossible.

Cheap hotel in Monaco: what to know before you search

Monaco covers about two square kilometres and its accommodation is geared towards the high end: palaces, 4 and 5-star hotels and a few charming addresses. A cheap hotel in Monaco, in the sense of a budget rate, therefore barely exists. A reasonable stay is possible, though, provided you accept adjusting one or two criteria.

Three levers make most of the difference: the date, because the same hotel can show very different rates between a Tuesday in November and Grand Prix weekend; the room category; and where you sleep, in the Principality or in a neighbouring town.

Why Monaco is expensive, and what really changes the price

Land prices, international demand and the events calendar explain the rates. The Monte-Carlo Rally in January, the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters in April, the Formula 1 Grand Prix in May and the Monaco Yacht Show in September push prices up and fill hotels months ahead. Outside those dates, demand is softer and so are rates.

In other words, the question is not only “which hotel?” but “when?”. If your dates are flexible, that is the first setting to explore.

Which dates to choose to sleep for less in Monaco

The table below gives a general idea of price levels by period. It does not replace checking your exact dates, but it helps spot the most favourable windows.

When to stay in Monaco: price levels by period

PeriodPrice levelGood to know
November and early DecemberRather lowOutside school holidays, demand is calmer
January (outside the Rally) and FebruaryLow to moderateExpect cool but sunny days
March and OctoberModerateGood periods to visit without the summer crowds
April, June, July and AugustHighMasters, start of summer season and holidays
May (Grand Prix) and September (Yacht Show)Very highHotels are often full months ahead
Year-end holidaysHighStrong demand around Christmas and New Year

Indicative levels, which vary from year to year and with the events calendar.

Travelling on weekdays rather than weekends, avoiding bridge holidays and school breaks, and extending your stay slightly to benefit from decreasing rates are also useful options. If you are unsure about the length of your stay, our itinerary to visit Monaco in one day shows what you can see without spending several nights on site.

Which room category to choose

The entry-level category is the simplest way to limit spending. A room without a panoramic view, or on a lower floor, costs less than the same room overlooking the harbour. If you spend your days out and about, the view is not essential.

Be careful not to save in the wrong place, though: a very small or poorly located room can spoil a stay. Compare the surface area, the floor and what is included before deciding. You can see the details of our rooms and suites to compare categories.

Sleeping near Monaco: Beausoleil, Cap-d'Ail or Nice

This is the most common solution for a tight budget. Beausoleil and Cap-d'Ail border the Principality, a few minutes away on foot or by bus. Nice is about twenty minutes from Monaco by train and offers a much wider choice of accommodation, generally at lower rates. Our guide on how to get to Monaco details the transport options.

What you gain

A wider choice of hotels, often lower rates and, in Nice, more restaurants and shops at more moderate prices.

What you lose

Travel time, a dependence on the last evening train, a transport cost to add to the bill and the ability to walk back after an evening in Monaco. Do the full calculation before deciding that accommodation outside the Principality is really cheaper.

Costs not to forget in your budget

A low room rate is not enough: compare the total cost of the stay. Several items count, such as the tourist tax, added per night and per person with an amount depending on the hotel's category, breakfast if it is not included, and parking, which is particularly expensive in the Principality. Our guide to parking in Monaco helps you anticipate the latter. Arriving by train often avoids the question.

Enjoying Monaco without spending much

Sleeping for less does not mean seeing less. Much of the Principality's charm is free: a walk around Port Hercule, the Saint-Martin gardens facing the sea, the lanes of the Rock or the changing of the guard in front of the Prince's Palace. To prepare these walks, our guides to Port Hercule and the La Condamine district give practical pointers.

Our tips for booking at the best price

A few simple habits often make the difference:

  • Book early for event dates, when rates are tightest and rooms scarcest.
  • Stay flexible by a few days: moving an arrival by 24 hours can change the price noticeably.
  • Compare the hotel's official website with the platforms, as some offers and perks are only available through the hotel.
  • Choose an entry-level category if the view is not a priority.
  • Calculate the total cost, including tourist tax, transport and parking, before comparing two accommodations.

💡 The concierge's tip

“If you are coming for an event, book the room first, then look for tickets. And before using a comparison site, check the hotel's own offers: some benefits are only available on its website. Once your stay is confirmed, the concierge can help you plan your days.”

Port Palace: a 4-star hotel on Port Hercule, with offers worth knowing

Port Palace is not a budget hotel and we do not claim it is. It is a 4-star boutique hotel with 50 rooms and suites facing Port Hercule, about a 5-minute walk from the train station, which avoids taxi and parking costs if you arrive by train.

Several offers help optimise a stay: 15% off the second room for a family stay (two rooms, or one suite and one room), an upgrade to a Junior Suite for a first booking, subject to availability, and free tourist bus places, to be requested from the concierge after booking. Detailed conditions are on the offers page and may change.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a cheap hotel in Monaco?

Budget hotels are very rare in the Principality, which is mostly made up of 4 and 5-star properties. To pay less, you can play on dates, room category, length of stay, or choose a neighbouring town such as Beausoleil, Cap-d'Ail or Nice.

What is the cheapest time to stay in Monaco?

Generally the periods without events: November, early December, February and, in January, the weeks that do not coincide with the Monte-Carlo Rally. Prices still vary from year to year, so compare your exact dates.

Is it better to stay in Nice or Beausoleil to visit Monaco?

Beausoleil and Cap-d'Ail border Monaco and are close on foot or by bus. Nice offers more choice and often lower prices, but means about twenty minutes by train and keeping an eye on evening timetables.

Do I need to book far in advance?

Yes for event dates, sometimes several months ahead, as hotels fill up quickly. Outside those periods, booking a few weeks ahead is often enough, although booking earlier gives more room choice.

Is the tourist tax included in the price?

It is usually added to the room rate, per night and per person, with an amount that depends on the hotel's category. Check at booking what the displayed price includes.
